Service weeks classes!

This week our school has been celebrating the first of  two service weeks, twenty-five classes will all be contributing and showing random acts of kindness to others.

So far we've had an amazing first week, from Room 11 shining shoes at lunchtimes, to Room 25 making eco-friendly hand sanitiser for teachers! One class was washing cars!!

Service week is going great, and we hope it stays like that!

How to be happy the triquel!

How to be happy no. 3 is up and running on our Youtube channel!

It teaches people how to make vegan mug cakes and lots of other really good things to allow us more joy in our lives. We ask ourselves serious questions as to why we should be happy and how we can make others happy.

Please watch it and share it with others. Spread the joy. Make others happy and the world can be happy.

Thanks

Refugee Mufti Day!

Some of our students went the extra mile in our make a difference inquiry when they organised a mufti day where all the profits went to the refugees at Mangere Refugee Centre. We are so happy to share our country with our new brothers and sisters.

If you would like to learn more about the Refugee Centre please watch this video. Remember, everyone is amazing :)

The Social Changency's party!

Today we are celebrating.  Everyone that is in the Social Changency and their friends. We are watching a Baha'i documentary to participate in Baha'i holiday that people all around the world are celebrating. We are all having a great time!
We have lots of snack food, but that's definitely not what we're here for.
The documentary was really good and we've learned heaps about many different people and their lives.

Start thinking about ways you can help for service weeks!!

Service week is coming up, and we're happy to give some ideas on what you can do! Our hope is that there are service projects organised by each class.
You can do these in a group, or by yourself. Try to get as many people involved as possible!!
Go find some sites that explain service to get some ideas :)

Everyone is amazing

The University of California, has just announced the launch of a research institute dedicated to the science of kindness. One of our core morals is being kind to one another. As a goal for today why don't you show  someone you care for a smile and tell them how amazing they are. Image result for smiley face gif

Everyone is so excited as this is probably the term that everyone has been waiting for. It is the time of year when you give to others and don't expect anything back.

Service weeks will be happening at school in the two weeks at the very end of the term (in weeks 7 and 8). Hopefully every student at Remuera Intermediate can get involved.

UN 2019

UN 2019 has started, many great speeches have happened. Gretas Thurnburg's amazing speech "how dare you" is an amazing speech, and most people there are trying to sort out climate change.

Jacinda is also there trying to make the Christchurch call more relevant and is trying to push it into action.

Donald Trump isn't realising what is happening though, but what is new?

The best places to plant trees

As we all know, trees are crucial in saving the planet. But now, scientists have identified where best to plant them. The researchers calculated that under the current climate conditions, Earth’s land could support 4.4 billion hectares of continuous tree cover. That is 1.6 billion more than the currently existing 2.8 billion hectares. Of these 1.6 billion hectares, 0.9 billion hectares fulfill the criterion of not being used by humans. This means that there is currently an area of the size of the US available for tree restoration. Once mature, these new forests could store 205 billion tonnes of carbon: about two thirds of the 300 billion tonnes of carbon that has been released into the atmosphere as a result of human activity since the Industrial Revolution.

BTS helps out on UNICEF

BTS went to UNICEF for international friendship day. The UN wanted these famous people to spread a positive message. They did well. It has spread around heaps.

The conversation (Placeholder)

Recently, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez met Greta Thunberg for a conversation for a Guardian article (link at end of blog)

One of the main points was, they'd been criticised, was that a 'taboo' is to not politicise children, because that's abusive. (Who decided this? Children can do what they think is right to save the world!)
This is also a very bad point, when in America the Koch brothers have brought most of the fossil fuels.

Themes in school!

At RI the value for this term is Creativity. So awesome.

For the Social Changency we are planning for our next project which relates to International Day of Peace which happens on 21 September.

Each Year level have different topics that they are learning about.

In year 7 we are learning about immigration, the hardships of it and what happens when you migrate. We are learning about the different types of reasons to migrate, push and pull reasons, and so on.

Here is a great link to a  non profit website GAPMINDER. they basically talk about how the world is doiing economically.  https://www.gapminder.org/

Cool Videos to prove you can go waste free!!!!

Here you go!

Ocean plastic pollution

Imagine that you are a turtle, happily floating in the calm blue sea. You see what looks to be a jellyfish, floating towards you. You reach out, about to eat it but suddenly you feel something around your  neck! The strange jellyfish is suffocating you, and your vision fades to black.

That weird jellyfish is a plastic bag, and turtles mistaking them for jellies is happening more and more which makes the turtle population less and less. It is also so many other sea life animals face the same threats :(
